Bathroom pod quality control: what should be checked during production?

The final inspection of a completed bathroom pod is important. It is also too late to be the first meaningful quality check.

By that stage, waterproofing has been covered, services are concealed and many construction details are no longer accessible without removing finished work. A pod may look correct while providing limited evidence of what has happened behind the finishes.

Bathroom pod quality control should therefore follow the production process, with inspections and tests carried out before the work becomes concealed.

Why is a final visual inspection not enough?

Producing bathroom pods in a factory creates an opportunity to inspect work at defined stages, while it is still visible and can be corrected without removing completed finishes.

The inspection method must suit the work being checked. Tile alignment can be assessed visually and dimensionally. Water and drainage installations require appropriate testing. Electrical work requires measurements by authorised personnel. Waterproofing needs to be inspected before it is covered.

A completed bathroom cannot provide the same level of information about these concealed elements.

Which stages of bathroom pod production are controlled?

Structure and boarding

Before finishes are applied, checks cover the materials used, construction details, openings, joints and connections, pod geometry, levelling and the position of the boards.

The shower area is also checked against the project documentation, including its dimensions, falls and installation details.

These controls take place before later activities make the underlying construction difficult to access. An incorrect opening, level or service position can otherwise affect several subsequent stages of production.

Waterproofing

Waterproofing cannot be assessed properly once it has been covered.

Controls during the waterproofing works include:

  • conformity of the materials used;
  • position of seals and waterproofing zones;
  • installation of tapes, collars and membranes;
  • assessment of the waterproofing layers;
  • sealing around relevant penetrations and components;
  • trap integrity.

The purpose is to inspect the system while its critical elements remain visible, rather than infer its quality from the appearance of the finished bathroom.

Water and drainage installations

Water and drainage controls cover both conformity with the coordinated design and installation performance.

Depending on the system, these checks include:

  • materials and components;
  • routing and fixing of pipework;
  • pipe insulation;
  • protection of water and drainage services;
  • conformity with the project documentation;
  • leak testing of water and drainage installations.

Record the results before the services are concealed or the pod progresses to the next relevant stage.

Electrical installation

Electrical controls include verification against the project documentation and the required measurements, such as insulation resistance and conductor continuity.

Personnel with the necessary competence and authorisation undertake the relevant inspections and measurements.

Tiling, painting and final fit-out

Tiling inspections cover more than tile colour and general appearance.

Depending on the bathroom design, the checks include:

  • tile setting-out;
  • falls within the shower area;
  • horizontal and vertical alignment;
  • surface level;
  • grout colour and completeness;
  • joint alignment;
  • trims and finishing details.

Painting, sealants, doors, sanitary fittings and other components are also checked for conformity, completeness and workmanship.

The final-stage controls include the cleanliness of the pod and its fittings, the condition of external elements and the conformity of the completed services with the project documentation.

Packaging and transport preparation

Quality control doesn’t end when the bathroom is complete.

Before dispatch, checks cover the packaging, protection of water and drainage services and identification of transport points and sensitive areas.

This stage protects the completed pod during handling and transport. It does not replace the need for an agreed logistics plan covering unloading, site distribution, storage and positioning.

Not every quality check is visual

A quality plan should distinguish between elements that can be assessed visually and those that require measurement or testing.

Who carries out the controls?

How is the evidence recorded?

A general statement that the pods have been “quality checked” does not explain what was inspected or provide evidence of the result.

Relevant controls, tests, and stage sign-offs are digitally logged for every single pod leaving the factory. Each unit is assigned a unique serial number, creating a comprehensive quality passport. This documentation includes pressure test logs, electrical measurement certificates, and photographic evidence of concealed works before boarding. This transparent data trail provides developers and general contractors with verifiable proof of compliance and quality assurance before the pods even arrive on site.

Does a benchmark pod replace production inspections?

No. A benchmark or mock-up pod and the production quality controls perform different functions.
The benchmark is used to review and agree matters such as design, finishes, access, interfaces and workmanship before series production. It establishes the accepted solution.

Production controls then verify whether that solution is being repeated during manufacturing. Approval of one benchmark pod does not provide evidence that every subsequent unit has been produced in the same way.

What factory quality control cannot verify

Factory controls apply to the bathroom pod and its defined scope of supply. They do not remove the need to manage the interfaces between the pod and the building.

Building tolerances, final service connections, drainage outside the pod, site handling, positioning and commissioning require separate coordination and inspection.

A pod can leave the factory in accordance with its approved documentation and still encounter problems if the building-side connection points or installation conditions do not match the coordinated design.

Factory and site responsibilities must therefore meet at clearly defined interfaces.

When reviewing a supplier’s quality arrangements, ask:

  1. Which activities are controlled on 100% of the pods?
  2. Which inspections take place before the work is concealed?
  3. What requires measurement or testing rather than visual inspection?

These questions provide more useful information than a general assurance that a supplier has a quality management system.

  • Final utility connections: Verifying the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing connections between the factory-fitted pod services and the primary building risers.
  • Protection during fit-out: Maintaining the protective packaging and floor coverings on site until the final handover to prevent damage from other trades.
